About Shotokan Karate

The Karate Info section contains information that students should find useful at which ever level they are at. This includes information about our style 'Shotokan', which was founded by Master Gichin Funakoshi in the 1920s and is the oldest of the mainstream Japanese karate styles. There are three main parts of Shotokan: Kihon (Basic techniques), Kata (Pre-arranged forms) and Kumite (Pre-arranged and freestyle pairwork). There are articles about Bunkai (the use of Kata in pairwork), Evasion (defending against attacks), body weapons (attacking/counter attacking) and grading requirements.

Certification

We have held the Club Halton accreditation since the 20th of March 2006. 'Club Halton' is an accreditation scheme developed and delivered by Halton Sports Partnership. The scheme is supported by Halton Borough Council, and Halton Strategic Partnership as they provide funding for the project.
