- Spectators are welcome during our classes as this is often a good way to assess a class before training - but
spectators will be asked to leave if they disturb the class.
- Talking is not permitted during the class except to ask questions and the instructor should not be interrupted
except in emergency situations.
- Students must make the instructor aware of any injuries prior to the start of the lesson or when asked.
- Ensuring your licence is current is your responsibility although we will try to inform you before it expires.
- Sometimes students are to pay and mark themselves in on the register when attending the class (if the
instructors are dealing with another issue).
- Students are to warm themselves up or talk quietly before the class starts and not cause a disturbance (NO
playing football or running around).
- During freestyle sparring, there is to be no contact with the front of the face and very-limited contact to
the side of the head (mainly for kicks). Target areas are the front and back of the torso but not the shoulder
blades, throat, arms or legs (except leg-sweeps for high grades). No open handed attacks are allowed during
freestyle.
- Only techniques shown in class (that the instructor in charge asks students to perform) are to be done - it is
not safe for students to start doing their own techniques during class.
- If training on pads or focus mitts, the emphasis for junior grades (below brown belt / 3rd kyu) is on
focus/aim not power.
- During mat work (Renketsu only), only the students working (or being demonstrated on) are to be on the mats
for safety reasons. You would not want someone being thrown or swept to land on top of you! The mats are designed
to be non-slip and laid flat - do not try to curl them up as this may cause a tripping hazard.
- All black-belts are to be addressed as Sensei (pronounced "sen-say").
- Students are to bow (to the centre of the room) when entering and leaving the dojo (training hall).
- Students are not permitted to leave the dojo (training hall) without permission of an instructor and when
returning to the dojo are not to re-join the class without the permission of an instructor.
- New students are to make it known if they have trained at other martial arts previously when asked. Any
student failing to divulge this information may be ejected from training as this has the potential to cause injury
to other students.
- Students must be presentable with a clean gi, trimmed finger and toe nails, long hair tied back and jewellery
must be removed (rings can be covered with tape if they cannot be removed).
